It is very necessary to have a strategy in solving the quantitative questions so that one can achieve the desired score. As per my experience there are three steps in solving the quant problems.
- Comprehending the problem: As most of the GRE/GMAT questions are word problems, this is the most important part in solving the problem. This constitutes almost 50% of solving the problem, understanding the idea or structure of the sum. As these exams have tricks and traps in the question, it is very important to read carefully.
- Making the flowchart in solving the problem: While reading the question try to make a flowchart simultaneously. Noting down the numbers and constraints given for variable prevents going back to the sum and helps in saving time. Reading the numerical again and again will irritate you and waste your time. This part marks 25% of solving the sum.
- Calculating the numerical speedily with accuracy: The questions asked in these exams are very basic but still not all get the desired score. The reason is the time constraint in solving the numericals. So try to do more mental math and avoid using too much of pencil and paper. If you are able to solve quickly. It will give you more time to comprehend the question. Discuss the strategist to solve (with the faculty members) or while solving the problem, read the strategies given in the book Rather than using the method studied during school time, try to explore and apply the logic you deduced while practising the numericals. This part contributes 25% to solving the numericals.
